The Misima open pit gold/silver mine lies to the east of Misima Island, 200km east of mainland Papua New Guinea (PNG). It is owned by Misima Mines Pty. Ltd., a joint venture between Placer Dome Inc (80%) and the PNG stateowned Orogen Minerals Ltd (20%).

Mining effectively commenced in Papua New Guinea in 1888 with the discovery of payable gold in Sudest Island (near Misima Island).Morobe Goldfield was discovered in 1922, which continued to operate till the Second World War. It was a world class goldfield by the standards of the time, reaching a peak production of tonnes/year of gold in 1942.

Up until 1970, there was little mineral extraction in Papua New Guinea. Since the 1970s mineral extraction has dominated the national economy. With the exception of the Ok Tedy Mine (coppergold) almost all of the mining in PNG has been gold mining. The two largest gold mines are the Porgera (Enga Province) and Lihir (New Ireland Province) mines.

Misima Mines is located some 600 kilometers east of the capital Port Moresby in the Milne Bay Province and 190 kilometers east of the Papua New Guinea mainland. The island of Misima is some 40 kilometers long and 10 kilometers wide at its widest point. It is a rugged, mountainous island with the highest point being 1035 meters above sealevel.
