Up until 1970, there was little mineral extraction in Papua New Guinea. Since the 1970s mineral extraction has dominated the national economy. With the exception of the Ok Tedy Mine (coppergold) almost all of the mining in PNG has been gold mining. The two largest gold mines are the Porgera (Enga Province) and Lihir (New Ireland Province) mines.

Misima Mines Limited (MML) is located some 600 kilometres east of the capital, Port Moresby, in Milne Bay Province (MBP) and 190 kilometres east of the Papua New Guinea (PNG) mainland. The island of Misima is 40 kilometres long and 10 kilometres wide at its widest point. It is a rugged, mountainous island with a high point of 1035 metres.
